IBM, Lenovo, HPE and Huawei Top ITIC 2019 Mid-Year Server Reliability Poll
Boston, MA, November 12, 2019 --(PR.com)-- IBM, Lenovo hardware up to 24x more reliable; 28x more economical vs. least reliable White box.
For the 11th straight year, the IBM Z and IBM Power Systems and Lenovo's x86 ThinkSystem servers, for the sixth year in a row, achieved the highest server reliability rankings among 18 different hardware platforms.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise's (HPE) Integrity and Huawei's KunLun mission critical servers also achieved high reliability ratings.
The ITIC independent annual, Web-based survey polled over 800 businesses worldwide from July through October 2019.
"Server reliability and availability is the foundation upon which the enterprise's daily operations, security and revenue, rest," said Laura DiDio, ITIC Principal Analyst. "Downtime of even a few minutes is costly and it disrupts productivity."
"An 88% majority of ITIC survey respondents say a single hour downtime costs over $300,000; four-in-10 enterprises report that the cost now tops one million to over five million," DiDio added.
IBM's Z mainframe is in a class of its own: 83% of respondents said their firms achieved five and six nines – 99.999% and 99.9999% - or greater uptime.
Among mainstream servers, IBM POWER8 and IBM POWER9, along with the Lenovo x86 Lenovo ThinkSystem; HPE Superdome and Huawei's KunLun servers delivered the highest levels of uptime. The IBM Power Systems (1.75 minutes) and Lenovo ThinkSystem (1.88 minutes) servers both achieved record reliability scores of under two minutes of unplanned per server/per annum downtime due to any inherent flaws in their respective hardware platforms. HPE and Huawei each registered two (2) minutes of unplanned per annum/per server downtime due to inherent quality issues like hard disk, memory or processor flaws.
Cisco's UCS servers also made big reliability gains – reducing unplanned server downtime from 4.1 minutes to 2.3 minutes per server/per annum over the last 10 months.
The superior uptime of the five top ranked mission critical server distributions makes them up to 24x more reliable and robust and as much as 28x more economical than the least stable White box servers.
Among the other survey findings:
· Minimum Reliability Requirements Rise. An 86% majority of companies now require a minimum of "four nines" or 99.99% uptime. This equates to 52.56 minutes of per server/per annum downtime.
· Human Error, Security, Software Bugs Top Three Issues Undermining Uptime. Human Error (59%), Security (56%) and Software bugs/flaws (38%) are the top three external issues that most negatively undermine reliability.
