Portable Storage Vendors Celebrate Earth Day
The National Portable Storage Association continues making moves to “green” the industry with a call to continue recycling portable storage containers.
Kansas City, MO, April 19, 2008 --(PR.com)-- As the world prepares to celebrate Earth Day, the portable storage industry is celebrating a heritage of environmentally friendly practices. The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA) joins with green companies and organizations around the world in recognizing the symbolic importance of this day.
"Portable storage containers are, by nature, an environmentally friendly way to ship products overseas because there are so many other uses for containers once they reach the port," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Here in the United States, we are recycling the containers. We are committed to building sustainable practices into our industry."
Specifically, when storage shipping containers are unloaded, NPSA members are retrieving them and distributing them to areas of the country for use as portable offices, on-site storage, emergency housing, and a myriad of other uses. Instead of building new portable buildings, for example, these containers can be retrofitted to serve as construction site offices, classrooms, security checkpoints and other uses that demand electricity, phone lines and air conditioning.
Recycling containerized storage reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators. What's more, every ton of steel that is recycled saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone, according to the Steel Recycling Institute. In terms of energy conservation, each year steel recycling saves the energy equivalent to electrically power about one-fifth of the households in the United States – that's about 18 million homes – for one year.
"When it comes to portable storage containers, it's easy being green," said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. "There are already many creative uses for recycled portable storage containers. By focusing on new and different ways to modify portable storage containers, we can continue our efforts to green the industry.
