Two Brothers Ages 9 and 13 Create New Worldwide Symbol for Biodiesel
Freehold, NJ, April 22, 2008 --(PR.com)-- When Alex and Austin Gere were asked by their father to help create a universal symbol for Biodiesel they had no idea it would have Global consequences. Their father Joe Gere who heads up the “Green Initiatives” for New York based rental company On Site Energy Co convinced the company to take a more proactive stance in keeping the environment green. The elder Gere was quoted as saying, “We (On Site Energy Co) are investing capital in the latest Clean Technology generators sets and are providing customers with biodiesel options to help reduce emissions even further, and right now we are the only New York areas true Green Rental company.”
Gere had gone looking for a generic symbol to place on the company’s rental equipment that would show they used Biodiesel fuel. He was shocked to find out that there was no universal symbol and turned to his two sons and along with local Freehold artist Gil Almogi crafted what they are hoping will become the new symbol for Biodiesel. The registered mark consists of a fuel nozzle dispensing a biodiesel droplet in the form of a “Green” earth. Alex & Austin were quoted together saying, “We learn about the environment in school and the effects of pollution and how it affects the globe and not just one country. We wanted to show the planet how it should look – all green and blue.” On Site Energy Co has been the first company to adopt the new symbol and they (the Gere brothers) have commitments from several others as well, their goal is to see their design around the world and hopefully it will allow people to see we can as individuals make a difference no matter how slight it may seem.
Biodiesel can be traced all the way back to Rudolf Diesel (father of the Diesel engine) who experimented with many different fuels to feed his invention, a compression ignition engine. The very first diesel engine was debuted at the Paris World Exposition and was powered by peanut oil fuel. Legend has it; the crowds who wandered into Diesel’s area were not to see his engine but thought it was a food pavilion (due to the smell of burned peanut oil).” In fact Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel in the US to complete EPA Tier I Health Effects Testing. It produces approximately 80% less carbon dioxide emissions, and almost 100% less sulfur dioxide than regular diesel fuel. Based on Ames Mutagenicity tests, biodiesel provides a 90% reduction in cancer risks. Biodiesel is safer to handle and transport because it is as biodegradable as sugar and 10 times less toxic than table salt. When burned in a diesel engine, biodiesel replaces the exhaust odor of petroleum diesel with the pleasant smell of hemp, popcorn or french fries.
