CVMSDC Announces $100,000 Altria Contribution to Support Black-Owned Businesses in Virginia

Corporate partner Altria contributed $100,000 to support certified Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) that are part of the Carolinas-Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council network.

Charlotte, NC, October 31, 2020 --(PR.com)-- In October 2020, the Carolinas-Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council announced that Altria Group contributed $100,000 to support its long-term educational initiatives for Black-owned businesses through the University of Richmond Robins School of Business. The grant is part of Altria’s Race & Equity Initiative, created in 2020 to address systemic racism faced by Black Americans and advance social and economic equity.

In response to recent nationwide protests and social unrest, many corporations are taking a stand against inequality. Altria’s program will help uplift and sustain Black-owned businesses and their owners by expanding business development resources to support economic growth. CVMSDC also launched a $1 million Social Injustice Campaign to fund programming that supports the organization’s mission of minority business development. The Campaign focuses on four supporting work streams: Certification, Development, Connection and Advocacy.

The CVMSDC mission is to expand business opportunities for Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) and create mutually beneficial links between Corporate Partners and MBEs. The ultimate outcome is to add economic value to the supply chain, while increasing economic opportunities in the business community.

Dominique Milton, CVMSDC President and CEO, said: “At CVMSDC, we strive to enable our minority-owned companies to enhance their skills to be competitive. “While education is fundamental to the empowerment of business owners, it also provides access to opportunities that allow them to reach their fullest potential. By providing our MBEs with tools to expand their businesses, we change the economic landscape. Through this grant, we will continue to actively support self-empowerment for twenty Black-owned businesses.”

“Supporting diverse suppliers is a critical action step that we believe can have a true multiplier effect on sustaining Black-owned businesses, so we have committed to increasing our support for diverse suppliers in multiple ways, with a focus on the communities in which we work and live,” states Jodie Clarke, VP of Procurement. “Having a healthy ecosystem of diverse suppliers requires commitment, focus and hard work. We are pleased to support this new program that will support the development of diverse suppliers and their businesses.”
