Belshay House Releases Debut Children's Book, "But I Don't Want to Say Goodbye"

In this poignant and heartfelt book, author Ta’Shay Mason expertly crafts a tender story about how to make peace with the death of a parent...by honoring them.

Grand Prairie, TX, November 30, 2020 --(PR.com)-- The death of a loved one is never easy to understand, let alone speak about. But for a little girl whose father has just died, the hardest thing is figuring out how to say goodbye.

Author Ta’Shay Mason is an expert in this field for several reasons. As a child, she lost her father at a young age and has firsthand experience navigating the myriad of emotions and struggles that accompany such a profound loss. She is a professional health worker and specialist who helps children like herself at a grief counseling center.

“Today is not a good day. Yesterday wasn’t good, either. And tomorrow, definitely, will not be good. We are getting ready to say goodbye to Daddy. But I don’t want to say goodbye.” (excerpt from But I Don't Want to Say Goodbye)

The young child in the book and her mother discuss what will happen in the days following her father’s death, the story providing a tender explanation of what to expect.

“Mommy says funerals make us think about the person we lost. We miss them, but there are a lot of good memories, like when Daddy brought home Bella. She says people will probably cry and laugh at the funeral. And there’s nothing wrong with that. There will be lots of stories told about him.” (excerpt from But I Don't Want to Say Goodbye)

Through soft and soothing words, the author weaves a story that shares both the commonality and uniqueness of loss, with the mother and child coming up with their own special way to honor and remember their beloved family member.

“Mommy says we are going to use Daddy’s ashes to make a reef. The reef will be a new home for fish and other sea animals. I like that idea. I think Daddy would, too.” (excerpt from But I Don't Want to Say Goodbye)

Filled with painterly illustrations and words that create a loving and caring story, "But I Don't Want to Say Goodbye" is a perfect book to help any family experiencing grief and also for those young readers who might need help in understanding someone else who is going through a loss.

With "But I Don't Want to Say Goodbye," Ta’Shay Mason has expertly handled the difficult subject of grief for children. A U.S. Army Veteran with sixteen years of service, Ta’Shay continued her service by working as a licensed social worker helping Veterans. Through her help at a grief counseling center for children, she assists other children who have lost a parent through death, working primarily with kids aged five through eight years old. She also works as a Behavioral Health Specialist PRN at a county hospital. Her vision is to help encourage others to be their best selves by enhancing their life's journey and to understand that grief is a process, not something to overcome. This is her debut children’s book.
