Grand Opening Set for Local Hospitality House
Chapel Hill, NC, May 01, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals will have its Grand Opening on Friday, May 9 in the Clark Courtyard at 123 Old Mason Farm Road in Chapel Hill. David Clinton, Design Principal with MHAworks, a Carolinas-based architecture firm, led the project team in the design of the 43,000-square-foot, 44-bedroom hospitality house.
The $8 million facility, which opened its doors to its first patients and families on March 31, will serve as a nurturing home-away-from-home for pre- and post-surgical patients from the transplant, oncology, burn, eating disorders and trauma units, as well as their families and caregivers, while they receive extended-stay medical treatment.
The project consisted of planning, programming, designing and following construction quality for the new facility, which includes single bedrooms and suites, library and computer spaces, a variety of comfortable living and dining areas, family cooking and laundry rooms.
“This is conceived as a hotel and a retreat for families who are coping with considerable stress and worry,” Clinton said. “It seemed that a shingle-style, rambling ‘manor house’ would offer them comfort and a relaxed dignity. It would be a place to wander the beautifully planted grounds, find privacy or share the comfort of others in like circumstances.”
The exterior is clad in cementitious shingles and trim for ease of maintenance and to permit the intricate, craftsman-style detailing. Patterned 50-year shingles cover the roof and windows are cased in a weather-resistant polymer. Interior finishes include warm, stained craftsman woodwork, original paintings designed into the architectural friezes, special stained concrete floors, and a focal stone fireplace.
