NorthWest Place and Ainsworth Elementary Team Up to Build Schools in Third World Countries

Portland, OR, May 05, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Bridging generations to help build schools, libraries and other educational infrastructure in third world countries, NorthWest Place and Ainsworth Elementary School have teamed up to raise funds for Room to Read, a non-profit group whose mission is to enhance educational infrastructure throughout the world.

Northwest Place and Ainsworth were partnered for this initiative through the Vital Life Foundation. Through this affiliation and other Vital Life joint ventures, they anticipate raising enough funds on behalf of Room to Read to sponsor the building of a complete school in a third world country.

In addition to becoming globally minded and learning lessons in giving the gift of education, Ainsworth fourth graders and residents of NorthWest Place are also gaining valuable inter-generational lessons. The first phase of the partnership began April 18th and included the opportunity for these 10 year olds to hone their reading skills by reading aloud to NorthWest Place residents. The students returned to read to residents Friday, April 25.

On May 2 and 7 the classes will return to NorthWest Place to interview residents on their classroom experiences that date back to the 1930s. The program will conclude on June 6 at 7:00 p.m. when NorthWest Place hosts a silent auction of artwork completed by the children. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to Room to Read.

According to Henrica Bors, a participating resident of NorthWest Place and native of Holland, the partnership is a wonderful opportunity for both the older and younger generations to impact the world community and each other.

“I really enjoyed listening to the children read,” said Mrs. Bors. “I think their English pronunciation is better than mine. I could learn from them and hopefully they can learn something from me too.”
