Air Force Cyber Innovation Center Taps Cyber Expert to Participate as an Advisor to their CyberWorx Project

Colorado Springs, CO, October 03, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The Air Force Cyber Innovation Center established CyberWorx at the Air Force Academy this Fall to tackle their toughest cyberspace problems. It is a new United States Air Force unit that solves operational problems by collaborating with government, industry, and academic experts through intentional human-centered design activities.

Andrew Vance, Executive Director at the Cyber Institute, participates as an industry and academic advisor to the research team to quickly design and develop creative solutions that solve problems for the warfighters who need them the most. Lt. Gen. Richard Clark said, “as we all know, cyberspace is a critical domain now, and it is only going to be more critical in the future; modern warfare is rapidly evolving. Advances in cyber innovation are advancing as rapidly. We must ensure that our future cyber superiority is secure, and that starts right here.” Vance began as a key member to one of CyberWorx’s first problems, “How might cyber risk to Air Force mission sets be conveyed to support commander decisions and enable multi-domain mission success?”. His team helped developed the Cyber Risk Ecosystem Design Project (https://afcyberworx.org/cyber-risk-ecosystem/). The goal was to convey risk in a manner that is intuitive while providing the information to support rapid mission assurance decisions at the basic, operational, and strategic levels of conflict. This project brought together a design team of 25 participants from industry expertise to cadets and active-duty operators, with a variety of expertise including cyber security professionals, economists, systems engineers, business managers, operations research analysts, and software developers. Vance said, “one of the innovative concepts their proposed solution provide was to utilize crowdsourcing to accelerate real-time data collection and dissemination”. Crowdsourced data facilitates mission assurance by identifying issues quickly, providing guidance toward systems fixes to restore systems, and providing guidance on alternative solutions to keep missions resilient. Vance said. “it’s an honor to be co-designing solutions for the warfighter’s problem, using design thinking as part of a collaborative team of military, academic, and industry participants.”
