Modular Devices Inc. Introduces New Modular Lab with Bi-Plane X-Ray Imaging System

Mobile Cath Lab Company’s new product will allow it to better serve the growth of Electrophysiology and Pediatric Cardiology Programs.

Indianapolis, IN, May 21, 2008 --(PR.com)-- “There has been a tremendous growth recently in the number of hospitals starting-up Electrophysiology (EP) Programs as well as in the number of Pediatric Cardiology Programs replacing their outdated X-Ray Imaging Systems,” according to Modular Devices Inc. CEO, Greg Mink.

This growth is what has led Modular Devices Inc. to create the first-of-it’s-kind and only Modular Bi-Plane Lab available for lease. Bi-Plane Imaging Systems are capable of covering the full size of the patient's lateral and frontal anatomy simultaneously for a variety of cardiovascular and neurovascular image-guided interventional procedures. This means that these procedures can be done with fewer x-ray images, fewer contrast injections, and lower radiation exposure - all of which are significant benefits for the patient. Bi-Plane Imaging Systems are used in cardiovascular imaging, diagnostic and interventional procedures, and three-dimensional imaging of vessels and soft tissue, making them the preferred system for use in both Electrophysiology and Pediatric Cardiology Programs.

Modular Devices recognized that Pediatric Cardiology Programs sometimes have only 1 dedicated cath lab, which means that when they choose to update their X-Ray equipment, they would have to shut-down their services during the equipment change-out process, which typically can take anywhere from 1-6 months or longer – this can result in turning away patients and sacrificing an important revenue stream for the hospital. Additionally, the growth in Electrophysiology has led to a number of hospitals wanting to add EP services, but not having a dedicated in-house lab, or the space for one, to support such a program.

While a common lab option for use during equipment change-outs and program start-ups is the rental of a mobile lab, a Bi-Plane imaging system is physically too large to fit within the space of a mobile lab because it is made up of two X-Ray systems, or two C-Arms, rather than the typical single-plane system which has one C-Arm. The challenge was in creating a design that would accommodate a Bi-Plane system and be a comfortable working lab for both patients and staff. Since Modular Devices Inc. offers not only a Mobile Lab, but also a larger Modular Lab option, the design team was able to engineer and design one of their large, Modular Labs in such a way that it would accept the added size and weight of a Bi-Plane Imaging System. The result is a the industry’s first Bi-Plane Modular Lab, measuring 14’ x 48’, designed especially for the needs of EP Programs as well as Pediatric Cath Labs.

“We are proud to provide the one and only Bi-Plane System available in an interim environment,” says Mr. Mink. “This product serves as the showcase of the talent and experience we have here at Modular Devices Inc.”
