Chicago Cares Opens Registration for City's Largest Day of Service: Thousands of Volunteers to Transform Chicago Schools

Nearly 40 Chicago schools, home to 24,000 students, are transformed by Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon volunteers.

Chicago, IL, May 21, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Registration for the 15th Annual Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon is now open. The June 14 event, the city’s largest day of service, is expected to register 8,000 people who will collectively give back nearly 30,000 hours of service to the community.

Nearly 40 Chicago schools, home to 24,000 students, are transformed by Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon volunteers. Volunteers brighten classrooms with fresh coats of paint, organize libraries to provide productive learning environments, and plant flowers to beautify the schools’ landscapes. Studies prove that a school’s physical environment directly impacts students’ performance.

“The work done at Serve-a-thon is vital to the success of thousands of Chicago students. Administrative and capital expenses are often the first items to be cut in a school’s budget. Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon volunteers help fill this gap by completing school transformations that otherwise couldn’t and wouldn’t be done, in turn creating more inviting and brighter learning environments,” said Katie Stearns, Chicago Cares director of service events. “Numerous academic studies indicate that a school’s physical environment has a direct correlation to student performance and the ability for teachers to educate effectively, reinforcing the importance of the volunteer work done at the Serve-a-thon.”

The Serve-a-thon opens with a morning rally before volunteers depart to their project sites. After a day spent beautifying schools, volunteers celebrate the day’s accomplishments with a post-event party featuring live music, food and beverages. Transportation to and from project sites is provided.

Volunteers can register individually or form a volunteer team of up to 50 people. Register at www.chicagocares.org or by calling 312-780-0800. A $30 registration donation is requested for the event, which supports Chicago Cares’ continued mission to provide opportunities for individuals and corporations to improve the Chicago community through inspired volunteerism. Prizes are awarded for teams and individuals that raise money through event pledges and team recruitment.
