Display Pack's Innovative Pie Box Wins Two Ameristar Awards
Grand Rapids, MI, May 24, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Display Pack Inc., an award-winning manufacturer of Single Source Solutions™ packaging services, was presented with two Ameristar awards – one award being the “People’s Choice Award” – at this year’s International Organization of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) Package Competition in Rosemont, Ill.
Display Pack won the awards for its cutting-edge design of a pie box created for Mary Beth's Apple Pie Co., a gourmet, mail-order pie company owned by actress Mary Beth Evans, who stars as Kayla Brady on "Days of Our Lives." These are the company’s second and third consecutive awards from IoPP, the industry’s top organization dedicated to the packaging profession.
“As a privately owned Michigan company, it’s an honor to be recognized among some of the top packaging designers in the world,” said Marty Tidball, director of marketing and sales for Display Pack.
A panel of 15 judges evaluated more than 100 entries spanning 15 categories. Judging was based on package innovation, protection, economics, performance, marketing and environmental impact. The People’s Choice Award was selected by attendees of the annual Packaging Summit that took place earlier this month.
“We are honored to receive this peer recognition for our work in the packaging industry,” added Tidball.
Mary Beth Evans hired Display Pack to create a unique carton that provides the support required for shipping a pre-baked, four-and-a-half pound apple pie. The result was a six-sided folding paperboard carton with a rosette-patterned top that secures tightly when manual pressure is applied. Four interlocking reinforcement flaps on the bottom of the carton distribute the weight evenly and are clearly numbered to make manual assembly quick and easy.
Graphics were developed by Display Pack’s Packaging Design team to illustrate the Mary Beth's Apple Pie Co. story, including photos of the baked pie, a rustic sketch of a young woman carting apples in a wheelbarrow, and Evans in her kitchen with a rolling pin and pie dough. Text includes the tagline, "I’ll make it, you bake it," baking instructions, and nutrition information. The carton's background colors reflect Evans' original chartreuse letterpress tags.
“This pie box is just one example of how packaging can be innovative and functional,” said Tidball. “Our packaging solutions help customers present their products in packaging that is attractive and functional to both retailers and end consumers alike.”
Display Pack also received an AmeriStar Award in 2006 for its design and production of the Oxi Clean plastic clamshell package and its innovative liquid tight seal, as well as the 2006 WorldStar Award from the World Packaging Organisation.
