Map Expert Denis Wood From ODTmaps.com Featured on Radio Islam Call-in Show Friday May 30th

Dr. Denis Wood discusses the nature and meaning of maps on Radio Islam. ODTmaps.com's map expert will challenge the world-view encouraged by many traditional maps, and will discuss a variety of map images and the messages they communicate. Maps imply a truth, but that truth can be quite skewed depending on the viewpoint of the map creator. Wood co-authored Seeing Through Maps, which takes a hard look at truth by carefully inspecting some familiar, and not-so-familiar, map images.

Amherst, MA, May 27, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Denis Wood from ODTmaps.com will be interviewed for one hour on radioislam.com on Friday, May 30th at 7PM EDST. The interview will be available on-line at the www.radioislam.com web site.

Dr. Wood will discuss the nature of map projections, with particular attention to the way all map projections shape the continents and countries on them. He will discuss the way some map projections change the relative sizes of places, making some bigger than they are, others smaller; the way other map projections change the shape of continents and the countries on them, stretching them in often strange ways. He will emphasize that no map projection can show the earth the way it is, and explain that this is the cost of trying to squeeze a spherical earth onto a flat sheet of paper. He will discuss the trade-offs among projections, and stress the importance of seeing the world through as many of them as possible.

Dr. Denis Wood loves maps and loves to talk about them. He curated the award-winning exhibition of maps at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in 1992, and its even more popular incarnation at the Smithsonian in Washington the subsequent year. Wood says, "It takes many points of view to understand the truth. We can only understand our world if we are willing to look at it from a variety of perspectives.” While Denis has appeared numerous times on National Public Radio, this will be his first time being featured on Radio Islam.

Wood's recent dynamic book, Seeing Through Maps: Many Ways To See The World, is published by ODTmaps.com. The book challenges the popular world-view by questioning a number of map images and the specific messages they communicate. Maps imply a truth, but that truth can be quite skewed depending on the viewpoint of the map creator. Wood's book takes a hard look at truth by carefully inspecting some familiar, and not-so-familiar, map images and exploring their significance.

Dr. Wood asserts that map projections provide information about countries, cultures, the world's peoples and their history. He also explains the principles and hidden messages contained in a number of unique maps and provocative images available from ODTmaps.com: Peters' Equal Area Projection, as well as Len Guelke's Mecca-centered Azimuthal Equidistant map found at: http://odtmaps.com/detail.asp_Q_product_id_E_Mecca-PC-4x6
