Insoshi Announces GA Release of Open-Source Social Networking Platform

Mountain View, CA, May 24, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Insoshi announced today the general availability (GA) release of its open-source social networking platform. The platform is designed to allow individuals and organizations create and manage social networks with full control of the presentation and member data.

"Millions of people use social networks to keep in touch, share information, and learn about other members of their community," says Insoshi CEO Michael Hartl. "We developed Insoshi so that any organization can tap into the power of social networks." He added that "Large organizations often have just the kind of communication and coordination problems solved by social networks. Insoshi can be part of that solution."

Social networks have emerged as a new mechanism of facilitating communication, on par with email and instant messaging. While sites such as MySpace and Facebook have proven the benefits of working in the context of a large social graph, the growing popularity of the social-network hosting site Ning has shown the demand for niche networks that can cater to the specific interests of a smaller community.

By providing an open-source platform, Insoshi taps into that demand for custom social networks but with customizations and controls that would not be possible in a hosted solution. Full access to the platform's source code, written using the Ruby on Rails framework, allows for the customer-driven development as well as the incorporation of updates and features from the Insoshi community.

Insoshi is actively working to grow its open-source developer community. As part of that effort, a developer site running on the platform has been made available at http://developers.insoshi.com. In addition to being a central location for coordinating the community efforts, it provides immediate feedback on the functionality and usability of updates and features that are continually being added to the platform.
