Gird Yourself for “The Grid” – Coming to Your Computer This Summer

Since that data storm would easily overwhelm today’s Internet, engineers created The Grid to handle the deluge. They set it up with dedicated fiber optic cables and state-of-the-art routing centers. They’ve got 55,000 servers installed now, and expect to have 200,000 within two years.

But while The Grid was created to meet the data demands of this earth-shaking experiment, it will immediately take on the mundane chores of today’s Internet, flowing email, digital movies and graphics at unimagined speeds. We’ll be able to send 3-D images and enjoy real-time gambling like never before, making the Internet obsolete.
