Bruce Colthart Creative Helps Tarnish the "Domestic Bliss" Myth on Paperback Book Cover, Now Available at www.amazon.com
Paramus, NJ graphic designer and writer helps humor author Carol Band launch her first book with attractive, compelling cover design featuring insightful text snippets.
Paramus, NJ, June 01, 2008 --(PR.com)-- “Carol Band reports from the front lines of suburbia. A writer, mom and chronicler of chaos, Carol tramples on the sacred ground of parenthood...” – from www.carolband.com
Award-winning author Carol Band, whose column "A Household Word" has been a syndicated hit for several years, approached Bruce Colthart Creative to design a cover for her new book.
After discussing and previewing a number of rough ideas, the motif of a slightly chaotic kitchen table, populated by several items mentioned in her domestic adventures, emerged as the most appropriate way to convey the tone and the content of her book.
The front cover’s background image, initially “sketched” with low-resolution web images, was ultimately constructed with high-resolution, royalty-free images from online stock photo sources. Images were silhouetted, rotated, colored, highlighted, shaded, layered and arranged into a composition that would complement all text to be layered onto it.
The title script too was carefully chosen and manipulated for style and clarity, without overpowering the overall design.
Beyond a purely pictorial contribution, Bruce also recommended some of the cover’s text. Just below the title script, a graphic burst reads, “Hopefully, one day, a major motion picture!” And near the cover’s bottom edge is a disclaimer all in upper case: “May contain graphic descriptions of domestic situations involving family members (parents, children, pets, plants, bathroom mold, leftovers, etc.) in less-than-ideal circumstances.”
The author is delighted with the end result. “The cover design provides strong visual cues as to the book's content and style – an important part of my book-selling strategy.”
"Bruce took my vague ideas and made them pop. He is a designer with a great sense of humor and an uncanny affinity for words. As the author of a humor book, Bruce was just what I needed."
