Preparing for the Upcoming Hurricane Season
Official hurricane season runs from June 1-November 30. There are no certainties in the field of hurricane predictions, but most agree that 2008 is projecting a “well above average” season. Colorado States forecasting team now predict 15 named storms this season. NOAA has come out and stated there is a “60 to 70 percent chance of 12 to 16 named storms” this season. Are you ready?
Jacksonville, FL, June 01, 2008 --(PR.com)-- If you're like millions of typical coastal residents, you'll probably put off preparing for one of Mother Natures most devastating powers. You've heard this before, but it's well worth mentioning again. Not a good idea. A little planning ahead is all it takes to avoid a huge headache should a storm kick up.
Here's a list of essentials that should be stocked in every coastal home this time of year:
Mobile Phone / extra battery
3 week supply of water (1 gallon per family member per day)
3 week supply of non-perishable food (typically canned goods)
3 Week supply of medications (if possible)
Can opener
Extra Clothing
Batteries
Flashlight(s) and portable radio
Toothbrush / toothpaste / personal hygiene products
Towels and a mop
Cash or travelers checks
Copies of important papers
Baby and or Pet food / supplies for 3 weeks
Plywood, nails and general tools
If it's in your budget, a generator (with fresh gas on hand) is a great item to have around.
If you've lost your power, there's a new way to get the latest hurricane information you're looking for. A new website designed for mobile phone viewing, http://evacuations.mobi delivers up to date hurricane conditions from NOAA as well as maps and directions for evacuation routes, links to coastal states emergency sites and more.
“It's often a difficult task to get information in an emergency when electricity is down” states Mark Bennett, founder of Idea Earth, the company responsible for evacuations.mobi. “Our free site is also helpful for those in traffic who are looking for alternate escape routes. Our mobile maps and directions, provided by Pilot.mobi, are just the ticket when you're stuck in traffic with or without a navigation system” Bennett continued. “All of our sites can be viewed on any mobile phone or PDA that has a browser and Internet access. They can also be viewed on a traditional PC as well as smart phones. “The majority of our population have mobile phones now. Most of these phones have Internet capabilities. We saw a terrific opportunity to develop sites that could help people in a wide variety of areas where Internet access was not typically practical a few years back. Our company has chosen to utilize the trustmark dotMobi domain for our mobile web presence. Using site addresses ending in dotMobi simply let visitors know they're going to a site designed to fit the small mobile screen and load quickly.”
