Are We There Yet? Canon Power Family’s Great Aussie Road Trip
Sydney, Australia, June 03, 2008 --(PR.com)-- As part of a national cultural project, professional photographer Greg Power, his wife Rachel and daughters Jasmine and Jemma are embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip to capture Australian life in the early 21st century through photography. The trip will see the Powers visit all five states and travel more than 17,000 km around the scenic perimeter and vast interior of Australia. To help the Powers capture individual ownership of their journey, Canon, the title sponsor, will provide each family member with a PowerShot camera to get their unique perspectives on the drive.
The Powers will regularly document the road trip through their photography at www.canon.com.au/powershot. The site features the family’s candid and spontaneous PowerShot images from their journey, including antics from the kids in the car, camping in the bush and scenery of Australian wildlife. The site also makes it easy to learn about the cameras that the family uses and explore the PowerShot range.
“Canon is extremely excited to be part of the Power family’s journey around Australia and look forward to seeing some amazing images captured on their PowerShot cameras,” said Kimberley Langton, Brand Manager, Canon Australia. “This road trip shows that there is a PowerShot camera to suit every member of the family, no matter what age or skill level. The camera's technology makes it easy to capture great shots from auto settings to special scene modes like sunset, beach and night scene for impressive photos. We look forward to seeing the range of pictures from the family and seeing Australia through their eyes captured on their PowerShot cameras.”
Along with the range of PowerShot cameras, Canon has supplied the family with camera cases and waterproof casing so they can even capture images when visiting coastal areas such as the Great Barrier Reef and gorgeous beaches of Western Australia.
The Open Road Beckons
The Power family will leave Canberra for the PowerShot Great Aussie Road Trip on June 4. The four-month photo road trip will take them up the east coast of New South Wales to Sydney and Narrabri, then on to Queensland, hitting popular destinations such as Hervey Bay and Cairns, and remote towns such as Normanton and Burketown. Northern Territory will be next with stops in Kakadu National Park and Darwin, then on to Gregory National Park and into the Western Australia leg of the journey, which will include towns such as Derby, Broome, Kalbarri and Perth. After making a turn east from Albany, the Powers will arrive at Esperence and Eucla, before travelling through Southern Australia and Victoria. This will feature stops in Streaky Bay, Mungo National Park, Wilson’s Promontory and Mallacoota, before finally pulling back into Canberra in October.
“The images on this drive will capture part of Australia that most of us don’t see every day,” said Langton. “This is where photography really gets interesting, because it freezes a time and place in history, which tells a unique and fascinating story.”
Through their travels and photography, the Powers will look to find those lesser-known locations throughout Australia, hoping to inspire other families to take to the road for similar holidays and discover the remote corners of our vast continent.
“Although we love the bigger cities and holiday destinations of our country, the PowerShot Great Aussie Road Trip is really about getting to towns in the Northern Territory and Western Australia that most Australians never get a chance to visit,” said Rachel Power. “We will look to celebrate all the differences and similarities among Australian cultures and tell these stories through photography.”
Canon and the Environment
As the Powers make their way around Australia, Canon will be contributing its part to the environment by offsetting carbon emissions and planting trees equivalent to the kilometres travelled.
