Books Ahoy! 7-Year-Old Swashbuckler Publishes His First Children’s Story

Memphis, TN, June 13, 2008 --(PR.com)-- A first-grader at Woodland Elementary School has achieved a major milestone most people don’t accomplish in a lifetime: he has published a full-color children’s book.

Seven-year-old Dalton James of Oak Ridge just published “The Sneakiest Pirates” (Outskirts Press). The book, which Dalton wrote and illustrated himself, follows the exploits of a father-son pirate team out to recover the king’s stolen booty from a high-seas thief named Peg Leg Chuck. It’s a spirited ocean romp told from a kid’s perspective that captures the creative energy of Dalton, a pirate fan and avid reader with a wealth of creativity and imagination.

Dalton’s road to publication began when his teacher read the children’s book “Yuck Soup,” by Joy Cowley. “Dalton came home that day and said that he wanted to write a book,” says Dr. Cliff James, Dalton’s dad. “He made a list of things that he liked to think about and pretend to be, and chose pirates.”

When the story was finished, his parents were so impressed they decided to publish it. Fast forward two months and Dalton’s first book was published and distributed by Outskirts Press. “Dalton’s success demonstrates that any dream is possible,” said Outskirts Press president and CEO Brent Sampson. “Outskirts Press is honored to be a part of this talented young man’s foray into the literary world. Through the additional support provided by our marketing services, we expect great things from him.”

Indeed. Dalton recently held his first book signing and “The Sneakiest Pirates” is now available nationwide through major online retailers like Amazon and has its own webpage at: www.outskirtspress.com/thesneakiestpirates.

While “The Sneakiest Pirates” is pure fun, the James family has a larger goal in mind for the book. Under a fundraising program, school libraries can purchase copies and keep portion of the proceeds. In addition, the James family will donate a portion of sales from each book to Dalton’s school.

“With schools having a harder and harder time with budgets we thought this would be a good way to give money back to them,” Dr. James said. “At the same time, we hope to encourage children to read and let them see that a 7-year-old could write and publish a book and they probably could as well.”

And he’s not stopping at just one. Dalton is already at work illustrating his next children’s book, titled “The Heroes of Googly Woogly,” which will tackle outer space. A third offering is in the planning stages. After all, who better to pen the next hit children’s book series than someone who so closely understands the audience?
