Norcross, GA, June 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Ashworth University has been selected by The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) to represent the academic achievements of students with a charter membership in the Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society for Distance Learning. As first chapter in the state of Georgia, Ashworth receives the Alpha designation.

Graduating students from Ashworth University and Ashworth Career School are eligible for nomination into the Society. As a member, inductees will receive a personalized Certificate of Membership and the Delta Epsilon Tau Gold Key of Distinction.

“Students graduating from Ashworth demonstrate a significant commitment to education,” according to Jon Bouffler, Ashworth Executive Vice President. Coming from all walks of life, many balance families, careers, and education in order to achieve their goals. To accomplish all this and achieve a high GPA deserves special recognition.”

National Student Recognition

Delta Epsilon Tau (DET), headquartered in Millville, DE, is sponsored by The Distance Education and Training Council and is the only Honor Society in America that represents accredited distance learning institutions. Members benefit from listing the distinction of membership in Delta Epsilon Tau on resumes when pursuing employment as well as from professional networking opportunities with other Chapters.

Established in 1997, DET members currently represent 25 colleges and universities in 14 states.

Selection Criteria

Each Chapter has flexibility in establishing its individual membership selection criteria. Students graduating from Ashworth University’s Career School, Associates, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programs are required to have a cumulative 3.5 GPA at graduation.

History

Greek letter societies have played an important role in American education and training since the early date of 1776 when Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776.

Today several hundred honor, professional and recognition societies and their chapters are active at some 3,000 colleges and universities across the country. These organizations seek to encourage and recognize excellence in classroom, laboratory and research work. To have such a chapter is a mark of distinction for a college or university and membership is highly prized by individuals as recognition of merit.

Distance Education

Distance education is a practical, convenient and economical alternative study method. For most, students gain competence and confidence as well as knowledge. These students know that course completion demonstrates self-discipline and favorable character traits that result in a richer, fuller life -- vocationally and personally.

To recognize the academic achievements of students who study at a distance, the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) Board of Trustees officially established the Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society (DET).

“The creation of this International Honor Society,” said Michael Lambert, DETC Executive Director, “publicly demonstrates that distance study is truly a viable educational option. In addition, it serves to inspire both students and instructors in the distance study community. It is the "Mark of Distinction" for an institution to be awarded a Chapter of the Delta Epsilon Tau Honor Society.” Institutions must be accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council before establishing a Chapter.

Society candidates should generally should have marks of "A" or rank at the top of their class. Each member receives a personalized Certificate of Membership and the Delta Epsilon Tau Gold Key of Distinction. Professionally die struck, sandblasted and polished, each Gold Key includes two of the finest words in any language—Excellence and Integrity. Additionally, each honor student receives a special narrative about the Honor Society and a personalized congratulatory letter from the President of Delta Epsilon Tau.

Institutional participation will help to support your marketing and admissions process; promote your programs and the effectiveness of your institution; build student morale; and give many students an incentive to complete their courses. It is hoped and believed that Delta Epsilon Tau will do in its field much of what older societies have done for their institutions.
