Bill Hewitt Awarded S.C. Order of the Palmetto

Water Missions International board chairman receives award at annual Water for Life Gala.

Charleston, SC, April 14, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Bill Hewitt, Chairman of the Board for Water Missions International (WMI), received the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, on April 8 for his "exceptional dedicated service" to South Carolina and the nation. Senator Jim DeMint presented the award on behalf of S.C. Governor Mark Sanford at WMI's annual Water for Life Gala.

Throughout his life, Hewitt has worked diligently to improve the lives of thousands of people on a local, state, national, and international level. In addition to his work with Water Missions International, he has served on several boards, including The Citadel School of Business Administration, the Medical University of South Carolina, Spoleto Festival USA, and Agape Ministries.

Hewitt has been recognized by many organizations for his leadership and contributions. In 2001, the Medical University of South Carolina awarded Hewitt a Doctor of Humane Letters, and in 2004, The Citadel awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration. In 2000, the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (Lowcountry Chapter) honored him and his wife Laura as Philanthropists of the Year.

In addition to his many roles as a leader, Hewitt also gives back to the community in more humble ways. He volunteers, cooking and serving food, at the Crisis Ministries shelter and the Rural Mission on Johns Island. He builds houses with Habitat for Humanity. He greets visitors on Sunday mornings at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where he is a Senior Warden, the top post for lay leaders in the church.

Molly Greene, President and cofounder of Water Missions International said, "WMI is truly blessed to have Bill as Chairman of our board. His vision, wisdom, and deep Christian faith make him the epitome of a leader. This leadership was vital over the past couple years, as WMI responded to the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. As an organization, we're growing very quickly, and Bill's experience and guidance are really helping to make sure we continue to grow in the right direction."
