Illustrated Scifi e-Novel 'Earth Alien Chronicles'

Australian author completes first volume of illustrated serial e-Novel, with release of 6th episode.

Fishermans Paradise NSW, Australia, July 06, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Australian author Bob Davis has used 3D graphics software to illustrate his first science fiction fantasy book, Earth Alien Chronicles, published as a serial e-novel. The sixth episode, completing Volume I, is now available on Lulu.com.

Mr Davis wanted to write his science fiction story, with colour illustrations to enhance the reader experience. He realised that the size of the work, with many so illustrations, might make printing it prohibitively expensive. He decided to make it an e-book, and to publish it as a serial novel, to keep the size of download files sensible. The six published episodes have over 750 colour illustrations. Together, the six episode files for Volume 1 run to over 550 PDF pages – and the story continues to evolve. Further new episodes are well advanced.

Initially, Mr Davis has published each episode in PDF, the most basic e-book format, taking advantage of the ubiquity of the free Adobe PDF reader. However, he is keen to publish the book in the new industry standard EPUB format which, amongst other benefits, will allow it to be read on a variety of mobile devices. Looking ahead, like many writers entering the digital content world, he prefers the new EPUB standard, ahead of proprietary e-book formats that require readers to purchase a specific vendor’s reader hardware device. He says: “The challenge will be to see how well the EPUB format can be made to work for illustrated books.”

On the challenge of being both writer and illustrator, Mr Davis said: “When I decided to illustrate my book, I had to acknowledge a handicap – I can’t draw! So I learned to use free Daz3D modelling and rendering software. I discovered an exciting new world of available 3D models and licensed content to use in my artwork. As an illustrator, of course I am still learning – but the more illustrations I do, the better they will get. Some of the illustrations are pretty good!”

The book chronicles the life and times of an advanced Alien species, living in secret on Earth for over a hundred thousand years, and now aspiring to emerge and live openly with and amongst humans. It follows their interactions and adventures with human friends and foes. The six episodes of Volume 1 can be found at: http://stores.lulu.com/scifi-novels-by-bob-davis
