Something to Talk About: New Kids’ Book Counters Put-Downs with Science-Backed Research
Kansas City, KS, July 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- In her more than 14 years of classroom experience, Melody Laubach saw first-hand the damage hurtful words can have on children. Now, this ex-teacher has written and illustrated a book to educate kids on the power—both positive and negative—of their speech. And the result could put a crimp in bullying and playground put-downs.
Just published by Outskirts Press (www.outskirts.com), Words and Thoughts goes beyond traditional moralizing to integrate the latest scientific studies on physical linguistic impacts into its age-appropriate message. In it, Sarah, a bright-eyed little redhead, is confronted with an all-too-common insult at school. But when she deploys the familiar “sticks and stones” defense, she still feels lousy.
That’s not surprising, her dad explains, then proceeds to detail how negative words have a detrimental impact on the material world. Drawing on current research, he points to evidence that negative thinking and speech show up in deformed water crystals. Bad words, so to speak, lead to bad water. And that negative energy, in turn, not only makes us feel bad psychologically, but it also has a physical consequence—after all, we’re mostly water, Sarah’s dad explains
It’s one piece of a larger understanding that also includes “cosmic consciousness” and the awareness that all living things are connected, Sarah learns. And so, suddenly armed with these new insights, Sarah returns to school eager and prepared to change her classmates’ behavior.
With the issue of bullying receiving ever more national attention, parents and educators need all the help they can get in imbuing children with a greater sensitivity toward others, particularly when it comes to their use of language. In treating complex issues with engaging, kid-friendly prose, Words and Thoughts has the potential to introduce readers to these themes, and then have them take the next step by transferring that message to their peers just like Sarah.
Words and Thoughts is now available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and the online bookstore of Outskirts Press, at outskirtspress.com/store.php.
