Wade Day Advances to Third Place in USAR Pro Cup Southern Division After Southern National Motorsports Park
Bristol, TN, July 26, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division visited the Southern National Raceway Park on Saturday, July 19th for the running of the Crane Cams 250. Wade Day entered the event in sixth place in the point standings and was looking for a strong run with only three races remaining before the Championship Series.
The Highlands Motorsports team brought a strong car to the Kenly, North Carolina, 4/10 mile oval, posting the third fastest lap in the day’s only practice session. Day backed up his practice speed during qualifying by putting the Lopez Wealth Management Ford Fusion on the outside of the front row. It appeared that Day had his second pole of the season until the last driver to take the track, Clay Rogers, beat Day’s time by .006 seconds. “We thought we had the pole, especially as it was starting to rain,” said Day, “but Clay came out and just ran a great lap. Those guys have a very good race team.”
Once the green flag dropped, Day stayed near the front, eventually taking the lead for 79 laps. “We were really good. We were going to come in early for tires, but decided to stay out since we were leading. We thought we would wait until the sun went down to make final adjustments for the end of the race.” Day gave up the lead to pit on lap 161. Day was fighting back to the front as he made a move to the outside of Woody Howard where they made contact, sending them both spinning with 43 laps remaining. The drivers were able to get their cars moving without losing a lap. Day explained, “I was on the outside of Woody and it looked like someone got into him and forced him up into me. We really should have made our pit stop earlier and not been back in the pack that late in the race. We had one of the fastest cars and finished eleventh.”
Despite a disappointing finish, consistency has been a key to the 2008 season as Day has completed every lap of the Southern Division season so far, propelling him to a third place position in the standings, behind Mark McFarland and Michael Ritch.
The Southern Division makes its next stop on August 2nd at the Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, North Carolina, for the Longhorn 250. “Hickory isn’t one of my best tracks, but I had my best finish of the season there last year,” said Day. Day finished seventh at Hickory in his 2007 rookie season.
