"A Good Book" Summer Reading Series Makes a Splash

Portland, OR, July 31, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The concept allowed customers to pick a book from a list of 20 books over the summer and post comments, critiques, and have ongoing discussions.

"So far, so good," reported Kimya Gordon, President of All About Us. "We're half way through the summer and the word is still spreading. There are so many really good books this season. It was tough to choose just 20. But, we are pleased with the variety Powell's offered, and the reader's were excited by the choices we made. The participation is proving to be better than expected."

Gordon stated that the most popular so far have been both of Barack Obama's books, "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream", and "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance".

Other hits have been a surprising interest in some of the non-traditional subjects, "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle, #61 on Oprah's Book Club List;

"Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Social Movement in History is Restoring Grace, Justice, and Beauty to the World" by Paul Hawken;

"Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri;

"Rapture Ready!: Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture" by Daniel Radish;

"Secrets of a Former Fat Girl" by Lisa Delaney; and

"90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life" by Don Piper.

"Thanks to Oprah's Book Club, people are reading again. Which is amazing when you think of all the options out there. Also, it encourages new writer's, and promotes community." Gordon stated. "Creating an online book club draws global involvement. We have an opportunity to expand our understanding of other cultures. Basically, it's virtual travel."

Gordon continued, "I have always been a voracious reader. This was one of the most rewarding projects, to open up a literary smorgasbord and invite commentary. It doesn't get much better than that for an English major."

Additionally, Gordon pointed out that Powell's Books provides the best prices and the largest inventory of books anywhere. This was the inaugural presentation of "A Good Book Series" and the company plans to make it an annual event.
