Elaine Marshall has served as N.C. Secretary of State since 1997 when she became the first woman ever elected to statewide executive office. She has since made substantial strides in modernizing government record keeping, making public records accessible, researchable and transparent in North Carolina. Prior to becoming Secretary of State, Marshall served on the NC Senate and was a partner with the law firm of Marshall & Marshall and earned a reputation for standing up for citizens’ consumer rights and women’s rights. She has previously served as Senator representing the 15th District of North Carolina and is an active member of the NC State Bar, the NC Bar Association, the NC Association of Women Attorneys, and the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.
