CANCER - AN OVERVIEW
INTRODUCTION
Cancer is a disease in which a group of abnormal cells grow uncontrollably to invade surrounding tissues and destroy them. This happens when the nucleus of the cell is damaged and is thus unable to behave normally.
SYMPTOMS
In the early stages of cancer there may not be much visible effect, but the early warning signals are as follows:
C - change in bowel or bladder habits.
A - a sore throat that persists.
U - unusual bleeding or discharge.
T - thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere.
I - indigestion or difficulty in swallowing.
O - obvious change in a wart or mole.
N - nagging cough or hoarseness.
CAUSES AND RISKS
Cancer usually occurs when the nucleus of the cell is damaged. It has however been seen that some people are more prone to cancer, in as much as their cells are more susceptible to the kind of damage, that leads to cancer. Cells can also be damaged after years of exposure to the sun or radiation. The consumption of tobacco can also lead to cancer. Certain chemicals can also damage the nucleus of cells and lead to cancer.
PREVENTION
The steps to prevent cancer are well known and are as follows:-
Avoidance of tobacco products will prevent the onset of lung cancer.
Limiting the exposure of children to the sun will help prevent melanoma.
Consumption of high fiber diet will help reduce the risk of colon cancer.
Avoiding the consumption of alcohol.
Self-examination by men of their testicles.
Self examination by women of their breasts.
Self examination of the mouth.
For those cancers which cannot be prevented, the way out is early/timely detection and diagnosis.
DIAGNOSIS
Where early warning signs point to cancer, its presence can be confirmed by the following methods:-
A piece of the abnormal cell is removed with a biopsy and examined in a pathology laboratory.
In some cases the whole tumor is removed.
Specialized X-rays and blood tests may also be performed.
TREATMENT
The following forms of treatment are prescribed for cancer:
Surgery - whereby the solid tumor is removed. If tumors are small, then they can be removed, and the cancer gets cured. It is however not effective if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Leukemia and Lymphoma can also not be treated by surgery, because they involve the blood system and are also not localized.
Chemotherapy - this is a form of treatment in which medicines are carried throughout the body, when they are introduced into the bloodstream. Chemotherapy can be used to control cancers which are not localized. However, all cancers are not sensitive to chemotherapy.
Radiation - This is a localized form of treatment in which focused energy waves of radiation are used to kill cancers or slow the pace of their growth. Certain forms of cancer that are sensitive to radiation or if they are localized can even be cured. Examples of such cancers are Hodgkin's disease and cancer of the voice box, or larynx.
Immunotherapy - is a method by which the body's immune system is used to kill cancer or to control it. Its effectiveness is however limited to only certain forms of cancer. Furthermore, as most cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage, immunotherapy in itself is not very effective.
In most cases, a combination of treatments have been found to be most effective.
ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF MEDICINE
Alternative forms of medicine like:
Acupuncture can be used for providing pain relief.
Herbal Medicine helps strengthen the body's ability to eliminate cancer cells. They do not however cure cancer, but can definitely prolong the life of a person suffering from cancer.
Homeopathy is effective in providing relief from the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
Mind and Body Treatment focuses on a persons emotions, behaviour and faith. It is believed that a person must maintain a positive attitude and live a life free of mental and emotional stress. Massage and reflexology have also been found to be effective in strengthening cells and promoting the release of anti-cancer hormones in the body. The Mind and Body treatment has been found to be very effective and powerful in dealing with cancer, and perhaps even preventing it.
Nutrition and Diet has been found to be effective in preventing tissue and cell damage and ensuring the proper immune function of the body.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been found to be effective in providing relief from the side effects of the conventional treatments of cancer. Practitioners of this form of medicine recommend the use of herbs like Asian Ginseng, Astragalus and Dong Quai.
