www.northernstar.ab.ca/As a leader in oil and gas publishing, Northern Star Communications has four oilpatch magazines - “The Roughneck”, “Energy Processing Canada”, “Propane Canada”, and “The Roughneck Buy & Sell” - as well as the annual “Alberta Gas Plant Directory” and volume one of “The Roughneck Joke Book”.
”The Roughneck”, a monthly digest-sized magazine, has been in existence since 1952 and covers the “upstream” sector of the oil and gas industry - exploration, drilling, completion and production. In 1998 both “Energy Processing Canada” and “Propane Canada” will celebrate 30 years of life. Both are published bi-monthly with “Energy Processing” covering the “downstream” sector - processing of natural gas, crude oil, and synthetics (such as oilsands). Propane Canada is devoted to the Canadian LP Gas industry. The Roughneck Buy & Sell, which was started in 1996, is a new and used oil and gas equipment trader. Northern Star is currently working on Volume IV of the “Alberta Gas Plant Directory”, which includes British Columbia and Saskatchewan facilities. These directories provide general and technical information on the more than 700 gas processing plants in the three prairie provinces. Another publication, “The Roughneck Joke Book”, highlights some of the best jokes from 40 years of “The Roughneck”. Volume II of “The Roughneck Joke Book” is currently in the process of publication.
Calgary-based Northern Star, which employs 13, is owned by Scott Jeffrey, who has been in the publishing industry for close to 20 years. Mr. Jeffrey also owns Pawistik Lodge, a fishing destination in northern Saskatchewan near the Manitoba border.
Scott Jeffrey, Publisher and Owner of Northern Star has been involved in the Canadian oil & gas industry for about 20 years. He began as a rig hand and gas plant worker during his university years, working summers while completing a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters degree in English Literature at the University of Calgary.
