More than 500 scientists, out of 725+ employees, work at the Burnham Institute. The scientists are organized into laboratories, each headed by a member of the Institute's faculty. Currently the Burnham Institute has 69 faculty members, and each of these scientists runs a laboratory staffed by as few as 2 or as many as 50 persons. Faculty are chosen based on their research interests and complementary research talents, so that multi-disciplinary teams of scientists can be formed to tackle difficult medical problems using a highly collaborative team-based approach to basic discovery science. These collaborative teams of scientists are organized into mini-departments called Programs.
