The Audubon Park Neighborhood and Students from Northeast Middle School (NEMS) to Honor Our Urban Ecology at the Spring Wingding, on Saturday April 25, 11am to 2pm
The Spring WingDing, Audubon Park’s annual community festival, coincides with Earth Week and Global Youth Service Day. Students from the neighborhood’s middle school anticipate a fun event which helps raise ecological awareness. “It shows how much these kids really care about the environment,” said Barb Kapala, Beacons Coordinator at NEMS. “By taking ownership of the Spring WingDing, they set an example of service and engagement for the broader community.”
Minneapolis, MN, April 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Audubon Park neighborhood in Northeast Minneapolis, and the students of Northeast Middle School, invite everyone to join in a celebration of the natural beauty woven throughout our urban environment. The Spring WingDing festival, held 11am to 2pm on Saturday, April 25th, is a tremendous opportunity to learn how we can live in increasing harmony with nature, even in a traditional city neighborhood. The event features bird-watching tours, gardening tips, and information on sustainable living, all combined with the fun, games and entertainment of a community carnival.
Northeast Middle School features an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) program. IB students are encouraged to combine learning with community service related to their interests. Many are concerned about the health of the planet they will inherit. Through the school’s Beacons Program, IB students become involved with community groups, like the Audubon Neighborhood Association (ANA).
ANA has focused its outreach efforts on environmental themes, in honor of its namesake, John J. Audubon. “We have so many wonderful assets, and our Spring WingDing brings them all together in support of our community vision as nature’s home in the city,” said Matt Brown, Association President. “It’s a natural partnership between the neighborhood and NEMS!” Kapala emphasized.
Complete information on the Spring WingDing can be found online at SpringWingDing.org.
