Young Scientist Award for M.Ashok Kumar

M.Ashok Kumar, a budding Junior Scientist in Genetics and Genetic Engineering at Frontier Lifeline & Dr. K. M. Cherian Heart Foundation, has received the ‘Young Scientist Award’ at the 34th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Human Genetics.

Chennai, India, May 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The award function was held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. K. M. Cherian, Chairman, Frontier Lifeline and the Dr. K. M. Cherian Heart Foundation said, “This is indeed a proud moment for us. We are glad that a young and promising Scientist who is associated with our organization is recognized and awarded for his presentation on Coronary Artery Disease.”

Every year this prestigious event presents the ’Young Scientist Award’ to recognize and encourage young talented scientists for the research carried out in any branch of Human Genetics. Three awards have been instituted for a significant piece of research covering clinical genetics, molecular genetics, cytogenetics, population genetics etc. This year M.Ashok Kumar has received the ‘Young Scientist Award’ for his oral presentation on ‘Variants on 9p21 associate with coronary artery disease and their haplotypes modify risks among Indians’ which deals with genetic variations on the terminal part of chromosome number 9. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a result of multiple factors and changes on genes and genomic location that influence the initiation and progression of the disease. The study’s results identified two new and two previously implied genetic variations for associations with CAD among the Indian population. The results propose that 9p21 as a region is involved in modifying progression towards CAD among Indians.
