Madison, WI, July 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Friends of Garett Kipp, an endurance athlete, draftsperson, and father, who is battling Stage IV Lung Cancer, are holding a benefit featuring three bands, a meal, a silent auction, a dunk tank, and kids' games.

This event is being organized by Kipp's friends Tom and Julia Willan to offset medical expenses and lost wages while he undergoes chemotherapy. A portion of proceeds will go to the Creating Hope Fund at the UW Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center’s for lung cancer treatment research through the Jodi Lou Organization.

After graduating from UW-Platteville, Garett worked at Cleary Building Corporation and later at Brunsell Lumber and Millwork. Garett and his wife, Vicki, have two sons, ages 3 and 1.

As a volunteer, Garett Kipp has built bike trails at Blue Mounds State Park, Cam Rock County Park, and at Quarry Ridge in Fitchburg. Garett is a Member of The Capitol Off Road Pathfinders, the Dane County Chapter of the Wisconsin Off Road Bicycle Association. He coordinated the 12-Hours of Blue Mound mountain bike race during the past few years. Garett belongs to the Chainsmoker Mountain Bike Club Team, and competed in the Wisconsin Off-Road Series of distance mountain bike races. In addition, Garett has completed three Birkebeiner Cross-Country Ski Races. Garett rode with the Patti’s Peddlers team in the MS-150 ride for five years, raising thousands of dollars for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Garett is a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Although he personifies “clean living” and has never smoked, Garett developed Stage IV Lung Cancer at age 35. Over the winter, he had a cough that was later diagnosed as metastasized lung cancer. Each year, 17,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer. 174,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, and 15% are non-smokers.
