Dr. Matilde Parente Challenges Go Red for Women Luncheon Attendees
A strong call for women to OWN IT! makes heart-sense for the new decade paramount
Indian Wells, CA, February 18, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Local physician and businesswoman Matilde Parente was the featured keynote speaker at the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women luncheon and health expo on Friday, February 5, 2010 held at the Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa.
Dr. Parente's presentation, OWN IT! HeartSense for the New Decade gave 650 mostly female attendees an overview of major cardiovascular disease risk factors. Parente provided tips any woman can use to address and modify her risk profile through simple and consistent lifestyle changes. Held on National Wear Red Day, many in the red-attired audience were surprised and empowered to learn how easily they can incorporate changes into their daily lives to stave off cardiovascular disease and boost health and longevity, even in women who survive a heart attack.
The annual American Heart Association (AHA) event raises awareness about the number one killer of American women. According to the latest 2010 heart disease and stroke statistics published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation, cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks and strokes, claims more female lives than all women killed by breast, lung and all other cancers plus all women claimed by Alzheimer's disease, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents combined.
“Another wake-up call for women to act, act now and act effectively is the fact that since 1984, female deaths from cardiovascular disease have exceeded that of men, year after year.” She continues, “we have a lot of work to do to dial down the numbers of lives lost and disabilities caused by this group of diseases."
As the Coachella Valley's third consecutive Go Red For Women event, this year's program featured educational seminars by Drs. John Feller of Desert Medical Imaging and cardiologist Dr. Henry Bellaci. A red handbag auction and heart-healthy lunch added excitement and fund-raising camaraderie for the cause. “This event demonstrated and celebrated the impact we can have on healthy living” said Parente.
“The challenges that today’s lifestyles present to our well-being make it critical for us to make better choices and to be vigilant about our health,” concludes Parente. “Our goal is to raise awareness that triggers personal ownership towards Heart-Sense.”
