San Diego, CA, June 11, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Competitor Group worked closely with local catering company Eco Caters (www.ecocaters.com) to provide a fresh, local and organic meal to elite athletes and sponsors of the race in the VIP tent this past weekend at the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
June 6th-San Diego
This year the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society VIP tent chose to go green by using local catering company Eco Caters. Although the two companies have had a partnership in the past, this was the first year an all organic meal was served to the elite athletes after the race.
Since 1998 Competitor Group has been hosting the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This is one of the only marathon series that combines the excitement of a concert with an endurance event. Athletes are pushed each mile by a cheering section and live band. After completing the race, participants join their friends and families to celebrate with a Finish Line Festival featuring a headliner concert and VIP tent.
This year the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society took place on a new course. The finish was at SeaWorld, next to beautiful Mission Bay Park. The new route featured 9 more waterfront miles, including a stretch through PETCO park. The new route also added the ability, for the first time ever, for runners to run a 13.1 – mile half marathon.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society drew in a few celebrity runners, including; Atom Willard, of the band Angles & Airwaves, “Real Housewives of Orange County” stars Lynne Curtin and Tamra Barney, and many other elite athletes.
The VIP tent hosted many of these elite athletes and stars of the running world. After winning his first marathon in an astounding 2:09:56, Richard Limo was seen mingling in the VIP tent. NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton was also spotted enjoying some healthy cuisine in the VIP tent.
In efforts to host a more sustainable event, Competitor Group has been working with Eco Caters for the past three years at both the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 To Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Carlsbad 5000. Eco Caters provides all organic food, purchased from local farmers. Eco Caters also subscribes to a “no-waste” mentality, which makes a difference at an event this size. They compost all of their food scraps and never waste any food.
Competitor Group also chose to use biodegradable plates and cups, a small change that can have a huge impact.
Of working with organic company Eco Caters, Anneliese Morgan of Competitor Group said “Eco Caters is a truly exceptional company to work with. Adam Hiner provides excellent service from planning the menu to execution the day of the event.”
Adam Hiner, owner of Eco Caters, says “Eco Caters really enjoys working with Competitor Group, athletes know good food and it’s great to be able to provide that for them after they run a long race.”
The series of musically themed marathons and half-marathons continues on, making its next stops in Seattle, WA on June 26th and in Chicago, IL on August 1st.
