Memphis Music Commission Launch CD & Cookbook to Fund Musicians Healthcare Plan

Many musicians do not have access to employer-subsidized health care. In an effort to assist, the Memphis Music Commission offers the Memphis Musicians Healthcare Plan through the Church Health Center. The program is self-funded and to keep it alive, the Music Commission has created "A Taste of Memphis Music: The Cookbook" and CD. Proceeds from the sale of the Cookbook and CD will benefit the Musicians Healthcare Plan. The cookbook is $25, the CD $10, and both sell as a combo for $30.

Memphis, TN, September 21, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission gives Memphians two ways to celebrate and support Memphis Music and Memphis Musicians with the official release of A Taste of Memphis Music: The CD and A Taste of Memphis Music: The Cookbook. Proceeds will benefit the Memphis Musicians Healthcare Plan, a program created to assist Memphis musicians who cannot afford health insurance. The CD will be officially released at an album release party held at the Hard Rock Café on Monday, September 20, 2010. Several of the Memphis musicians showcased on the CD will perform at the Hard Rock Café, located at 315 Beale Street. Wednesday, September 22nd, the celebration continues with the official release of the cookbook at Davis Kidd Booksellers, 387 Perkins Extended. City of Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton, Jr., and several popular Memphis musicians, who shared their recipes, will be on hand to autograph cookbooks and perform. Both events will take place from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission Executive Director Johnnie Walker believes both projects will be a success because they appeal to the entire community. "Good food and good music just go hand-in-hand and these two releases contain both!

"The cookbook & CD were developed to showcase Memphis music and our musicians in ways everyone could appreciate. We purposely loaded the CD with a wide genre of songs and loaded the cookbook with a delicious variety of recipes. I’m sure everyone will find something they like whether on the CD, in the cookbook or both. Supporters of these projects will not only gain access to great products, they will also enjoy the satisfaction that comes from being a part of a worthwhile cause… and Memphis musicians are worth the support.”

A Taste of Memphis Music: The CD features jazz, blues, pop, gospel, hip hop, R&B, and country music by Memphis musicians Al Kapone, Mack Rodd, Deering & Down, Dani, Ruby Wilson, Reba Russell Band, Perfection, Curtis Jones, Winston Stewart, Nancy Apple, Vicki Loveland, Lila, Toni Green and King Ellis.

A Taste of Memphis Music: The Cookbook contains nearly 150 delicious recipes for beverages, soups, salads, vegetables, side dishes, main dishes, breads, and desserts. Notable Memphis musicians Keith Sykes, Reba Russell, Joyce Cobb, Susan Marshall, and Larry Dodson of the Bar-Kays are among a few of the musical chefs who submitted recipes for their favorite dishes. Recipes from the First Lady of Tennessee, Andrea Conte, City of Memphis Mayor A. C. Wharton, Jr., Congressman Steve Cohen, and Food Network superstar Claire Robinson are also included in the cookbook.

“The CD and the Cookbook are among several projects the Music Commission has launched in an effort to promote and build Memphis music locally, nationally, and throughout the world. Cookbook & CD sales will help us to raise necessary funds to continue the Memphis Musicians Healthcare Plan. The Musicians Healthcare Plan allows our musicians to focus on making great Memphis music while minimizing some of their worries regarding the cost of healthcare,” said Walker.
