Sitting is the New Smoking
Sitting at work for 9 hours can be as detrimental to your health as smoking, says a new study on health in the workplace.
Gainesville, GA, April 08, 2012 --(PR.com)-- “Sitting is the New Smoking,” says Marc Hamilton, a physiologist at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. OiC, the leading manufacturer of adjustable height, sit and stand desks, quotes Mr. Hamilton in their brochure on the Desktop Elevator. The Desktop Elevator is the unique sit and stand desk alternative to standing or sitting all day while working. This catchy phrase is a very bold statement but it needs to "Show Me the Money". Where is the evidence? One study was done between 1992 and 2006 by Alpa Patel, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society. Dr. Patel tracked the health of 123,000 Americans and found that men who spent six hours or more per day of their leisure time sitting had an overall death rate that was about 20 percent higher than men who sat for three hours or less. For women, it was 40 percent higher. Dr. Patel concluded that, on average, people who sit too much shave a few years off their lives.
In another study, Dr. James Levine, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota concluded that sitting for nine hours a day at the office is bad for your health and it doesn't matter whether you go home and watch television the rest of the night or go to the gym for an intense workout. There is no difference if you are thin and totally in shape or obese and out of shape, sitting is bad for you. Dr. Levine says, "Excessive sitting is a lethal activity."
With the results of these studies, it appears conclusive that Dr. Hamilton's quote, "Sitting is the New Smoking" is very relevant. Just as we as a society attacked the dangers of smoking by aggressively supporting smoking cessation programs, we need to find solutions for people to be less sedentary. “While we certainly don't advocate standing all day, as this creates its own set of problems, the Desktop Elevator, an adjustable height, sit and stand desk is the best option to improve overall health and extend the life of an individual,” says John Burkhalter, CEO of OiC innovations.
