Sweat Equity Network Makes It Possible for Anyone to Race Around the Hawaiian Islands. Virtual Racing Teams Racking Up Miles on Behalf of Charity.in.
Honolulu, HI, April 17, 2012 --(PR.com)-- It’s an adventure race you can join from your own backyard. Sweat Equity Network has opened registration for the first ever Great Race: Hawaiian Islands. The Great Race is a virtual race that uses the company’s online Leap4Life platform to enable teams anywhere in the world to compete in a distance-based race in and around the Hawaiian Islands.
“We’re excited to offer this innovative and fun way for employers to build camaraderie among their employee base, while instilling a new and sustainable approach to living a healthier, fit-active lifestyle,” said Lee Embley, founder of the Sweat Equity Network, the organization that developed the Leap4Life program. “With the popularity of charity events and team-based racing events like The Amazing Race, we saw the opportunity to bring gamification elements together with fitness performance in an exciting new way. By racing on behalf of a cause around the virtual course, teams experience the dual benefit of helping others and helping themselves with a healthier approach to their daily fitness.
“Now, no matter where someone lives in the world, they can race in a whole new way through the use of technology and a social media interface such as Leap4Life,” Embley said.
Participants will form teams of 10 racers and will log a combined total of 525 miles over four weeks, the equivalent of a virtual racecourse from the Garden Isle of Kaui to the Big Island of Hawaii. Using a FitLinxx® ActiPed+ device, a sophisticated pedometer that tracks steps, distance, active minutes and calculates caloric burn, participants easily log their physical movement wirelessly and upload it to their online Leap4Life account. This data allows Leap4Life to track an individual’s progress on a virtual race course, wherever they are running, jogging or walking in the world. Their totals are then combined with their teammates to move the whole team forward.
Along the way, racers encounter specific fitness challenges, such as completing a certain amount of active time in a 24-hour period, taking a specific number of steps on a particular day or burning calories. The race’s goal is to help participants move along the course while they simultaneously experience meaningful health-related benefits. Racers see their progress immediately and earn recognition through an online point system. Throughout the race, they’ll be competing against other teams on the same course.
This first virtual race is taking place with the Hawaiian Islands as the backdrop, thanks in part to collaboration between Leap4Life and several Hawaii-based corporations. The businesses are sponsoring teams in the race, and many of the teams will be racing on behalf of a charity.
Registration for the May 7 start of the Great Race is open through April 30, 2012, and space is limited to the first 100 teams to register. Cost for participation in the race is $120 per racer, and the fee includes the racer’s ActiPed+ device, ActiLink software for wireless data transmission and reporting as well as a branded Racer Kit, including a Great Race: Hawaiian Island racing bib and other commemorative items. At the end of the race, each racer can continue to enjoy the remainder of their 12-month membership in Leap4Life to experience all of the other benefits associated with this online fitness community, connecting with others who are engaged in living healthier, fit-active lifestyles and encouraging each other as they participate in additional virtual events for point-based awards and recognition. Leap4Life’s ongoing virtual fitness events are published weekly within the community.
