Parabens are synthetically manufactured, mass-produced preservatives used in a high percentage of personal care, consumer, and anti-aging skin care products. Their purpose is to provide an easily made, low cost way to extend the useful shelf life of products and inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Concern with parabens originated from a study in Great Britain in 2008 where researchers discovered the presence of parabens in the tissues of women with breast cancer. Later studies not only confirmed these findings, but scientists in Japan have discovered that certain parabens can also increase the rate of aging of the skin.
