Easter Seals UCP Celebrates World Cerebral Palsy Day by Kicking Off Month-Long Wellness Challenge
Easter Seals UCP North Carolina & Virginia encourages people with and without disabilities to increase their physical activity during month of September.
Raleigh, NC, September 06, 2012 --(PR.com)-- In an effort to support the 17 million people around the world living cerebral palsy, a disorder that affects muscle tone, movement and motor skills, Easter Seals UCP North Carolina & Virginia will hold a four-week wellness challenge that encourages participants to walk 8,500 to 14,000 steps per day to promote an active, healthy lifestyle and raise funds to support programs that provide support, care and hope to people living with cerebral palsy, a common physical disability that often occurs before or during a child’s birth, or during the first 3 to 5 years of a child’s life.
The Challenge requires participants to form a team of four and costs $25 per person. Once a team is registered, each participant will be sent a Challenge Kit, which includes two pedometers. Each team member tracks their daily step count or other fitness activity and records it on their personalized World CP Challenge webpage. Participants can walk, run, cycle, swim or even bowl to increase daily steps. The revolution of a wheelchair's wheel rotations can be converted to steps, allowing anyone to participate in the challenge. There are over 40 activities to choose from including activities suitable for people with a disability.
Each team selects one of three fitness level divisions and climbs a virtual mountain during the course of the Challenge. Each day, as team members enter their steps, the team will progress up the mountain. The aim of the Challenge is for each team to reach the top by the end of September.
