Charitable Golf Tournament Organizers Seek Players, Donors

The Glen Taylor Jr. Memorial Fund was established by Sara Taylor Hardy of Taylor Packaging Corporation in 2007 in memory of her brother, who died in 2000 at the age of 27. “I wanted to figure out a way to help others and honor Glen’s memory so we established the Memorial Fund and decided to host an annual benefit in his name,” Hardy said. To date, the fund has raised more than $40,000 in the past four years and has provided 16 scholarships for local, college-bound students in need.

Plans for the Fifth Annual Glen Taylor Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament are in full swing, with golfers and contributors scrambling to participate in the popular event. The charity tournament raises money for the Glen Taylor Jr. Memorial Fund, which provides $2,500 college scholarships for needy St. Louis and Jefferson County-area students each year, and organizers are putting the call out for players and donors.

The 2012 tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at Riverside Golf Course in Fenton, Mo., with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Spaces are available for 36 teams of four (144 total players). Entry is $85 per person or $340 per team and includes the green fee, cart, lunch, day refreshments, dinner, goodie bags and door prizes, as well as the silent auction that’s been a hit each year.

The 2012 fund-raising goal is $20,000.

“It’s an ambitious target,” said Tournament Director Sara Taylor Hardy of Taylor Packaging Corporation in Imperial, Mo. “We just keep trying to reach further and do more every year, because every dollar we raise gets a student who needs our help that much closer to his own goals.

“Our goal is to reach those who may not have the opportunity to even start college, so the $2,500 is a great start in the right direction for these kids in true financial turmoil.”

Tournament organizers are still accepting auction item donations and tournament sponsors. Several sponsorship levels are available and include sponsor signage. Depending on the sponsorship level selected, donors may also receive rounds of golf for 4 to 12 players with one mulligan per player.

“Player entry fees are just the tip of the iceberg. The silent auction is where we generate a lot of scholarship funds,” Hardy said. “Participants bid on everything from weekend getaways with hotel stays to spa packages, liquor and fine food baskets, and sporting goods to adult-themed packages.”
