What's Up Doc?

…pet rabbits proving to be positive source of therapy.

Commerce City, CO, May 06, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Wes C., a resident at Woodridge Terrace in Commerce City, CO has been keeping very busy these days. Recently confined to a wheelchair for the Cerebral Palsy he’s been afflicted with since birth, he’s not exactly feeling sorry for himself…he’s simply got too much responsibility to dwell on his health problems.

Wes was recently dubbed the “Rabbit Wrangler” in this skilled nursing and rehabilitation community he’s been a resident of since early last year. Instead of spending his time watching the world go by, he spends his days caring for the four rabbits that also make their home at Woodridge Terrace. As part of his work program, Wes totes his favorite rabbit Ricochet around to other residents, who are also able to enjoy the rabbits as part of the successful community pet therapy program. Wes is like their proud father, and it’s a pretty nice way for him to earn a little extra spending cash.

While pet therapy’s earliest “clinical” roots appeared in the early 18th century in England, pet therapy has only come into vogue in medical settings in the U.S. during the past 40 years. Various studies show pet therapies being a valuable tool in the development of social, emotional and cognitive functioning for residents in medical environments.

Just as England seems to have the earliest roots in establishing pet therapy, it seems only natural that they would also be the founders of National Rabbit Awareness Week, which runs this year from May 4th through May 12th. The folks at Woodridge Terrace have decided to borrow this fun new tradition from their friends across the pond and are bringing the tradition to Commerce City.

During the week running May 4th through May 12th, Woodridge Terrace residents will be encouraged to join Wes as he shares their stories…and yes, they have stories. Wes’ life has transformed since he became the Rabbit Wrangler. Tears come to his eyes when asked why he does it. Once he get’s over the emotion and composes himself, he simply says, “…because these rabbits need me and they give me a reason to get up every day.”

Woodridge Terrace is a quality-based and resident-driven community with 47 years of providing skilled nursing, long-term care and rehabilitation services in Commerce City, CO. Woodridge Terrace has built a reputation among the metro-Denver medical community as the area’s top community for achieving positive medical outcomes from medically complex cases.
