Teacher-Training Program Helps Science Spread Benefits of Belly Dance

Scientific study finds women who participate in belly dancing enjoy a more positive body image. As popularity and demand of belly dance classes rises, one industry professional is meeting the demand and setting standards to enhance the student experience.

Sterling, VA, September 27, 2014 --(PR.com)-- According to a recent study conducted by Australian researchers led by Marika Tiggemann of Flinders University, women who participate in belly dance have a more positive body image and enjoy increased confidence and comfort in their own skin.

In light of these new scientific findings, the popularity of belly dance will continue, and demand for qualified instructors will rise. Katayoun Hutson, founder of Mosaique Center for Cultural Arts in Sterling, Virginia has launched a new website called Raqs Mosaique Belly Dance Teacher Training, to train dancers to become qualified instructors.

While the Australian study is not the first to tout the benefits of belly dancing, the findings highlight what Hutson and others in her industry have known for years. She says, “It is amazing to watch the transformation in students. On the outside, they begin to glow, and on the inside they are healing, growing, and nurturing self-love. But it is a very personal and individual experience. My goal is to help our teacher-trainees facilitate that journey through standards of quality teaching and breadth of knowledge.”

The program offers an optional teacher certification, a rigorous process requiring knowledge of anatomy, pedagogy, cultural movement vocabulary, and industry standards.

Training sessions are being scheduled now for 2015 at select studios nationwide on a first-come basis.
