Las Vegas and Henderson Massage Envy Spas Make the Case for Men and Massage Therapy
Studies show distinct health and emotional benefits of massage therapy for men.
Las Vegas, NV, October 17, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Massage therapy soothes sore muscles, reduces stress and complements a wide variety of traditional medical therapies. So why aren’t more men incorporating therapeutic massage into their routine wellness regimens?
The American Massage Therapy Association conducted a national study in 2009. Among the statistics revealed: While 40 percent of women reported receiving massage therapy at least once within the previous five years, only 29 percent of men had seen a massage therapist.
“The reasons for the discrepancy shouldn’t be all that surprising,” said Jill Peters, regional director for Massage Envy Spas in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada. “Often, men have several questions about massage therapy they are hesitant to ask. Some men, like women, have body image issues that keep them from enjoying the benefits of therapeutic massage,” Peters continued. “We understand that. At Massage Envy Spa, our therapists are courteous and professional, and are ready to answer any questions our clients might have, in order to help them have the best possible experience.”
Though massage has definite health benefits for both men and women, some are specific to men. A 2010 study from Sweden showed that one 80-minute hand-and-foot massage significantly lowered men’s heart rates, cortisol levels and insulin levels- all of which help to lower stress and the body’s reactions to it. Persistent stress can wear down the male body mentally and physically. In fact, a 2010 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry indicates massage may well ease symptoms of depression. Other studies indicate that regular massage therapy significantly lowers chronic neck and back pain, in part by releasing endorphins, which increase the threshold for pain tolerance.
Of the men who do regularly get massages, many have seen benefits for knee problems, specifically, osteoarthritis. In 2006, a controlled trial study was done at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The study concluded that patients with diagnosed osteoarthritis saw significant improvements with regular massage over an 8-week period.
Men can also enjoy increased range of motion, which can improve athletic performance and help prevent injuries, with regular sports massage.
