Saddleback Memorial Medical Center's Diabetes Clinic Earns Recognition from American Diabetes Association (ADA)
The Laguna Hills Diabetes Clinic is the only ADA-recognized program for adults and children with diabetes in the Saddleback Valley.
Laguna Hills, CA, February 18, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Diabetes Clinic at the Heart and Wellness Center at Saddleback Memorial recently earned its education recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for meeting national standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) programs. This marks the fifth time that Saddleback Memorial’s Diabetes Clinic earns the national designation. Currently, the Clinic is the only ADA-recognized diabetes clinic in the Saddleback Valley.
Awarded for four years at a time, the ADA gives the voluntary designation to programs that meet national standards and quality measurements monitored by the ADA. Saddleback Memorial’s Diabetes Clinic earned its first ADA recognition in 2001.
“This recognition provides health care professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services their patients will receive from the outpatient diabetes clinic,” said Saddleback Memorial’s Manager of Diabetes Services Tammi Boiko, MSN, RN, CDE. “Our doctors can confidently refer their patients—moms, dads, children, and seniors—to an ADA-compliant program.” Boiko also serves as the Immediate Past-Chair of the California Coordinating Body of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
The Diabetes Clinic has offered diabetes self-management and education (DSME) as well as community education classes for more than 20 years. Taught by Certified Diabetes Educators, patients meet one-on-one, as well as in small group classes to learn the basics of diabetes, meal planning, blood glucose monitoring, managing diabetes during pregnancy, medical nutrition therapy (MNT), medication management, and exercise. Diabetes Wellness Community Education, a monthly educational meeting, is facilitated by Certified Diabetes Educators, is free and open to the public. To learn more, or to attend the next scheduled class, visit www.memorialcare.org/classes or call (949) 452-7873.
Only four other hospital outpatient diabetes programs in Orange County share the ADA education recognition: CHOC Hospital - Orange, UCI Medical Center - Irvine, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital - Fountain Valley, and Hoag Hospital - Newport Beach.
The American Diabetes Association, the nation’s leading non-profit health organization supporting diabetes research, estimates that there are 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of people in the United States who have diabetes. Life-threatening complications from diabetes include heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. According to the California Department of Health, more than 2.3 million Californians are diagnosed with diabetes. Orange County is one of the top 10 counties in the state with 131,000 residents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
