Metropolitan Wind Symphony Band Concert: Boston Strong
Boston Strong is composer Zach Friedland’s musical response to the spirit with which Bostonians met the challenge of the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013. Also on the program are Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst, Mt. Everest by Rossano Galante, Havendance by David Holsinger, American Civil War Fantasy by Jerry Bilik, Fugue a la Gigue by J. S. Bach, Heather Ridge Sketches by Stephen Bulla, Officer of the Day March by R. B. Hall, Illyrian Dances by Guy Woolfenden, and Last Stand by David Avshalomov.
Lexington, MA, April 14, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Metropolitan Wind Symphony will continue their 44th season with their Spring Band Concert on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 3:00 pm, at the National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington, MA. MWS Music director Lewis J. Buckley will conduct the program. Featured will be the world premiere of Boston Strong by student composer Zach Friedland, his musical response to the indomitable spirit with which Bostonians met the challenge of the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013, Officer of the Day March by R.B. Hall, Illyrian Dances by Guy Woolfenden, Last Stand by David Avshalomov, Fugue a la Gigue by J. S. Bach / arr. Gustav Holst, Heather Ridge Sketches by Stephen Bulla, Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst / arr. G. Jacob, Mt. Everest by Rossano Galante, Havendance by David Holsinger, and American Civil War Fantasy by Jerry Bilik. Mr. Buckley will deliver a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 pm.
Composer Zach Friedland attended the University of Rhode Island and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music composition in 2013. He has studied composition with Jeremy Van Buskirk, Geoffery Gibbs, Eliane Aberdam, Dominique Schafer and Grammy nominated composer Joe Parillo. In 2012, he was selected as the nation’s first recipient of Kappa Kappa Psi’s Francis W. McBeth Student Musicianship Award. He was also a recipient of the Geoffery Gibbs Scholarship in Music Composition, the James Ladewig Scholarship in Music History, a Kappa Kappa Psi National AEA Scholarship, and a Richard Bureau Hope and Heritage Travel Grant. Friedland is now a graduate student at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is working to finish a master’s degree in music composition under the direction of John Howell Morrison.
Lewis Buckley earned his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music and his Master’s degree from Connecticut College. In 1975, he became the Coast Guard Band’s fifth director at age 27 and held that post for 29 years. He continues to compose, arrange, and publish music. He also remains an active trumpet soloist, frequently combining solo appearances with conducting, often in premiere performances of his own commissioned works. Buckley has a diverse background, having conducted bands, orchestras, and choruses in all styles of music from classical to commercial to jazz.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors, $6 for students, and are free for children under 5. They are available at the door or can be reserved by telephone. Founded by Jerry Gardner in 1971, the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, a concert band, is currently celebrating its 44th anniversary. The MWS comprises over 70 talented woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists who audition for membership and seating. It makes a significant contribution to the cultural life of the Greater Boston community by providing its audiences with high quality concerts and its members with opportunities for musical growth.
