Delaine Eastin, David Theriault to Keynote CUE 2015 Fall Conference
Walnut Creek, CA, May 21, 2015 --(PR.com)-- CUE is pleased to announce its keynote speakers for the CUE 2015 Fall Conference, October 23-24 at American Canyon High School in Napa Valley.
Delaine Eastin will deliver the opening keynote on Friday, October 23 at 8:30 a.m. Eastin served as the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) for eight years from 1995 to 2003, the first and only woman elected to that office. She advocated for numerous changes in education from universal preschool to reduced class size in K-3, from better technology and hands-on learning to a restoration of the arts and career and technical education. She was the architect of the first Net Day, an electronic barn raising, copied in 40 states and 40 countries. She also advocated for and achieved parallel A-G standards for attendance at the University of California and California State Universities. Prior to her service as California’s top educator, Delaine served eight years in the California State Assembly where she authored what was the largest school bond in history and put higher education and K12 education together in that bond for the first time.
Delaine was the first Executive Director of the National Institute for School Leadership in Washington, DC and then a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Educational Leadership at Mills College in Oakland. She serves on a number of boards that support the education, nutrition, health and civic engagement of children from preschool to college. She is Chair of ClosetheGap.CA to elect more women to the legislature in 2014 and 2016.
David Theriault will deliver the closing keynote on Saturday, October 24 at 3:15 pm. His keynote is titled “The Life Aquatic: This Is Adventure.” In keeping with his enthusiastic and inspiring teaching style, Theriault describes his talk and his background:

“While I’ve always loved learning, I haven’t always loved school. Even though I was a GATE student, I struggled with what school expected from me. Eventually that struggle ended with my dropping out of my honors classes and spending my class time doing anything but what was asked of me. Facing an F in English 12, I asked my teacher if I could do something risky and unexpected: something memorable. He said yes, and since then I expect and encourage the same approach in my students and in my approach to learning. I’ve been blessed to work with others in creating #CAedchat, edcampHOME, #slowchatED and other learning adventures. When I’m not teaching, you can find me at my two blogs (thereadinessisall.com and ideaFM.org) or eating at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant while talking with friends.
