North Sound Community Invited to Support Recovery
National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.
Mount Vernon, WA, September 02, 2017 --(PR.com)-- “Join the Voices for Recovery” stories of hope and recovery for people living with substance abuse and mental health disorders.
The National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI) of Skagit and the North Sound Recovery Coalition have joined together to host the first ever five county event celebrating National Recovery Month. People recover from substance abuse and mental illness but their stories are drowned out by news of people committing crimes, getting admitted to Emergency Departments and being impacted by the Opioid epidemic. There is another side to this tale, but it is a silent one. It’s where people are living productive lives alongside other community members, but you would never know it because people are often equally ashamed about their recovery as they were about their disease. “This has to change, we have to offset the stigma of mental illness and substance abuse, and this is done by proudly sharing our hope, health and recovery,” said David Jefferson, NSRC Chair.
Folks will be gathering from all corners of the region to “Join the Voices for Recovery.” The event is from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturday, September 16th at the First United Methodist Church, 1607 E. Division Street, Mount Vernon 98274. The event is free. All community members, including individuals and families directly affected by substance use disorder (SUD), mental health disorders, those with dual diagnosis, as well as everyone interested in facilitating a climate of recovery throughout the North Sound, are invited to attend.
Author, comedian and nationally-renowned recovery champion Marti MacGibbon will be the keynote speaker. Ms. MacGibbon has addressed the White House about the challenges of drug addiction. Her book, Never Give In to Fear, Laughing All the Way up From Rock Bottom, was #22 on the Amazon list of top-selling books. In it, she tells riveting true story of escape from human traffickers, finding true love, and ultimately conquering addiction.
The day is a collaboration of organizations, agencies, businesses and individuals from Snohomish, Whatcom, San Juan, Island and Skagit County. The event will include food, entertainment (including music by DJ RoyBoy), and number of “mini” educational sessions with local subject matter experts, door prizes and, information booths. Free tickets are available at Eventbrite at bit.ly/jointhevoices.
Other event sponsors include: Follman Counseling Agency; NCSDA Church; New Earth Recovery; Pioneer Human Services; North Sound Youth and Family Coalition; North Sound Behavioral Health Organization, Island County Human Services, San Juan County Health and Human Services, Skagit County Public Health, Snohomish County Human Services, and Whatcom County Health Department. Come join them for “fun and fellowship.”
