Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes Awards 2nd $6,000 Grant to Horses Helping Heroes Project
Grant will help fund pilot program combining music and equine therapy.
Smithfield, VA, March 04, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes (Coalition), a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding the lives of severely wounded veterans of the War on Terror, today awarded a second $6,000 grant to the Horses Helping Heroes Project.
The grant will help fund no-cost, equine-assisted activities and therapies for wounded veterans, as well as an innovative music therapy pilot program at HHHP’s facilities in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. It is the second $6,000 grant awarded by the Coalition to HHHP.
“We were extremely impressed by exceptional work done by the Horses Helping Heroes Project through the initial grant we made last year,” said David Walker, President & CEO of the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes. “When Debi told us about her pilot project, we agreed that a second grant was more than justified. We’re looking forward to reviewing the results of that project.”
The Coalition’s $6,000 grant will provide partial funding for HHHP’s sessions this spring in addition to the pilot program using music therapy in conjunction with equine therapy to enhance the long-term benefit of the HHHP program. Music therapy has been proven effective in improving speech, memory functions and focused attention, as well as balance and gait. It has also been shown to improve the ability to perform activities of daily living.
Participants in the program will be military veterans with special needs and such disabilities as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, brain injury (both traumatic and anoxic), spinal cord injury, amputations, orthopedic issues and stroke.
“We’re so thankful that the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes thinks so highly of our program that they’ve awarded us a second round of funding,” said Debi Demick, Program Director with the Horses Helping Heroes Project. “We’re very excited about the prospects for enhancing our program with the addition of music therapy, and we’re grateful that the Coalition shares our vision.”
